Brake Drum & Brake Shoes FAQs

A brake drum is an integral part of an older style of brake system called the “drum brake”. The brake drum is a cylindrical drum that is attached to the inner portion of a car’s wheel. When the brake pedal is pressed, brake shoes push outwards against the inner surface of the brake drum, generating friction and slowing the car down.

Brake shoes are crescent-shaped and create friction to stop a vehicle in the drum brake system. They are commonly replaced alongside brake drums. Brake shoes and drums function similarly to brake pads and rotors, so it’s important to take care of both when repairing your drum brake.

  • Scraping or grinding noises: As brake shoes wear down, they’ll start to grind against the brake drum. If you experience noises when you brake, it’s important to see a car technician to repair your brakes as soon as possible.
  • Brake pedal vibrations: Whenever brake drums are worn down, you may feel vibrations or fluttering in your brake pedal.
  • Loose parking brake: If a parking brake feels loose when you try to engage it or if you feel your car is slipping when the parking brake is engaged, you may need your brake drums and shoes repaired.
  • Weak brakes: If you’re stepping on the brake and it’s taking longer than usual to slow down, you may have an issue with your brake drums and shoes.

In most cases, you will need to replace your brake shoes if you’re replacing your brake drums, so they can share the same wear pattern.

You can replace brake drums and shoes yourself, but we recommend contacting our mobile brake repair technicians in Austin, Dallas/Fort Worth, and Houston to ensure your brakes are functioning correctly.

How can I convey how perfect my experience was with these guys? WOW. Seriously, WOW. Everything from the scheduling, to the information I received before and during the repair, to the ballpark estimates that were spot on, to the phone call letting me know status… to the modern use of text messages and emails to let me know when they arrived and to send me a receipt…

Easiest auto work I’ve ever had done…

Rachel D. - Austin, TX

5 stars all the way! Chase came out to my work… He looked at my brakes and told me that I didn’t actually need my brakes replaced and he could reset the sensor for me… Aside from the professionalism and knowledge Chase had, I was most impressed with his honesty…
