Brake Master Cylinder FAQs

A master cylinder is a central component of a car’s braking system. The entire braking process relies on the master cylinder.

For power-assisted brakes, the master cylinder is attached to a brake booster, which supplies power to the braking system. For manual brakes, the master cylinder is attached directly to the firewall and linked to the brake pedal.

The master cylinder serves as the main valve that pushes brake fluid through the brake lines so that the brake calipers can squeeze the pads against the rotors. It functions by pushing a metal rod through a cylinder to force fluid through the braking system to the wheels.

Usually a master cylinder fails because of its age or your car’s brake fluid was not flushed or replaced at manufacturer recommended intervals.

One of the first symptoms commonly associated with a bad or failing brake master cylinder is abnormal brake pedal behavior. The brake may feel spongy and keep sinking towards the floor. You may also see brake fluid leaking from the back of the cylinder against the firewall or brake booster.

Replacing a brake master cylinder may be a difficult task, as you will first need to move some components like hoses and wires out of the way. You will also need to bleed the system; bleeding the system is an important part of a master cylinder project because it allows the new master cylinder and the brakes to function properly. To ensure your brakes are working properly, we recommend contacting our mobile brake repair technicians in Austin, Dallas/Fort Worth, and Houston.

How can I convey how perfect my experience was with these guys? WOW. Seriously, WOW. Everything from the scheduling, to the information I received before and during the repair, to the ballpark estimates that were spot on, to the phone call letting me know status… to the modern use of text messages and emails to let me know when they arrived and to send me a receipt…

Easiest auto work I’ve ever had done…

5 stars all the way! Chase came out to my work… He looked at my brakes and told me that I didn’t actually need my brakes replaced and he could reset the sensor for me… Aside from the professionalism and knowledge Chase had, I was most impressed with his honesty…
